Snyder’s Of Hanover Thinks Your Family Needs Fewer Tortilla Chips

The definition of how much food should be in a “family size” package is kind of fuzzy, but it’s apparent that snack food company Snyder’s of Hanover thinks that our families need to eat fewer tortilla chips. One perceptive tortilla chip fan report that their “family size” bags are in the process of shrinking from 16 ounces to 12.5. Reader Ira spotted this in a store, but didn’t grab a picture. There’s evidence that a change is in progress online, though: some grocery stores list the family size bag as 16 ounces, and others have it at 12.5. “At my local supermarket they have both [sizes] on the shelf right now for the same price,” Ira reports. On the company’s promotional website, the unflavored chip bags have “The Pounder” branding, for those 16 ounces. So does my local grocery chain, Hannaford. The change hasn’t rolled out to all stores yet, but if you order the product directly from Snyder’s, how big is that same bag of tortilla chips? 12.5 ounces.
